The Waterfront possesses the only operational swimming pool in Mpulungu. Currently we rely on lake water which is replaced directly and frequently. Improvements are planned in the near future to enable full time swimming in re-circulated chlorinated water.
The Lake is clean and inviting. The water is pure enough to drink if you move away from villages. There is no bilharzia. Unfortunately crocodiles live along the shore line. If you swim in the lake at mid day in calm water there is little risk from crocodiles, but however small it is a real risk. It is not advised to swim in the lake.
The steep beach slopes round most of the lake and the abundant and colourful fish life provide a wonderful spectacle for the diver. Because most of the fish are coastal, there is no real need for full diving gear. The snorkeller can experience most of the sights, are will be able to see dozens of fish species.
Lake Tanganyika has several hundred species of fish, mostly from the cichlid family, and is studied by environmental and evolutionary scientists from all over the world. Whilst the fish do not reach the spectacular standard seen on coral reefs, many are extremely attractive, and the breeding patterns and ecological interrelationships are the most diverse and complicated in the world.
