Mpulungu is the centre of a thriving commercial fish trade, because it is the only functional outlet for fish for hundreds of miles around the lake shore.
Unfortunately fish in the vicinity of Mpulungu have been depleted, and the angler has to further away. Kasaba Bay in Nsumbu is the home of the angler and boasts an annual international angling competition in February/March.
There are some 80 fishing villages along the Zambian coast of Lake Tanganyika. They range in size from decent towns with their own schools and health clinics, so just a few huts. They may be situated on flat fertile sites with their own fields for agriculture or on steep rocky exposed beaches. Most are unfamiliar with tourists and English is not spoken. However, without exception you will be warmly welcomed, even if you become an object of curiosity to the kids. All only have access by boat
The Waterfront has a banana boat and outboard, for those unafraid of the water, but its range is limited.
It is possible to hire fishermen’s boats to take you wherever you want. This will take private negotiating, in which we can assist.
